Theatre
Formed in the early
1900’s the Ulster Literary Theatre began a tradition of passionate
theatre that survives in Belfast to this day. Theatre in Belfast is
cherished and well attended; a tradition that has fostered and
developed the talents of several generations of successful and
highly respected performers, including Liam Neeson, Stephen Rea,
James Ellis, James Nesbitt, Colin Blakely, Greer Garson, Stephen
Boyd, Gerard Murphy, Patrick Magee and Adrian Dunbar.
The city is home to over 15 full-time theatre companies and
multi-award winning contemporary playwrights such as Owen
McCafferty ('Scenes from the Big Picture'), Marie Jones ('Stones in
his Pockets') and Gary Mitchell ('In a Little World of Our Own').
You will find ground-breaking and innovative drama alongside the
finest classics as a thriving theatre community continues to
challenge, provoke and entertain.
