Our theatre and comedy is born
first on the streets of Belfast. Colloquially the magnificent
artwork ‘Harmony’ in Thanksgiving Square is known
as 'doll with the ball’ and that just about sums up the humour of
the local people here - irreverent and razor sharp. There are
numerous venues around the city in which to experience excellent
theatre and comedy and sample the unique charm and
wit of Belfast. Theatre in Belfast is cherished and well
attended; a tradition that has fostered and developed the talents
of several generations of successful and highly respected
performers, including Liam Neeson, Stephen
Rea, James Ellis, James
Nesbitt, Colin Blakely, Greer
Garson, Stephen Boyd, Gerard
Murphy, Patrick Magee and Adrian
Dunbar. Belfast’s dynamic theatre companies have premiered
work by Sam Thompson, Stewart
Parker, Brian Friel, Frank
McGuinness, Anne Devlin, Graham
Reid, Martin Lynch and Jennifer
Johnston. And who could forget the great
comedians that have emerged from the Province, like Frank
Carson and Patrick Kielty.
