Markets
Markets have been a way of life in Ireland for hundreds of
years. Originally farmers and cottage producers informally gathered
together in a town square and set up a table or bench and sold the
fruits of their toil. Gradually the market became an opportunity
for isolated farm workers to meet and socialise, ballad singers and
itinerant musicians would ply their trade and as time passed the
market grew into a fair. There are few markets today to match
Belfast’s
St George’s Market in beauty and vibrancy.
Recently restored to its original splendour a visit is a treat for
visitors and locals alike. Closer to the centre of the city is
Smithfield Market equally energetic and full of
local colour. Don't miss the Continental Market
which comes to the grounds of Belfast City Hall every Christmas and
for the last weekend in May.

This elegant building, built in 1896, is the oldest continually operated market in Ireland. The Friday Variety Market opens at 6am every week and runs until approximately 1pm. The Saturday City Food and Garden Market takes place from 9am until 3pm has a fusion of tempting speciality foods from around the world.

Smithfield Market is located at West Street and Winetavern Street in Belfast City Centre and contains a range of shops selling a wide range of goods and services including comics, camping equipement, electrical goods to collectable model soldiers. The modern Smithfield replaced the old Victorian market which was destroyed by fire in 1974.
