Cathedrals & Churches

Belfast CathedralThe cathedrals and churches of Belfast are some of the most treasured gems in our city’s crown. There are two great cathedrals, both worth a visit. St Anne’s Cathedral a beautiful Hiberno-Romanesque structure is located in the Cathedral Quarter to which it gives its name and the twin-spired St Peter’s Cathedral a Victorian Gothic Revival building is to the West of the City. Right in the heart of the city, St Mary’s Church, built in 1784, is one of the oldest city churches while the Sinclair Seamen’s Venetian style harbour-side Church in Corporation Square has a maritime theme and beautiful stained glass.

St Mark’s at Dundela is an essential visit for those who like to investigate the inspiration behind their favourite work of art; redolent in subtle imagery this beautiful red sandstone church, designed by eminent Victorian architect William Butterfield, had a profound effect on a young CS Lewis who drew on the imagery to create the Chronicles of Narnia.
