Few places have witnessed more history than the heritage town of Carrickfergus. Today Carrickfergus is a peaceful suburb in a beautiful seaside setting ten minutes from Belfast. But, through the middle ages, this town was the major military stronghold on this island (the only stronghold at times) and the scene of invasion, siege and surrender up until the 17th century.
Carrickfergus’ strategic position on Belfast Lough ensured its status as Ulster’s leading town for centuries – until upstart Belfast toppled its crown!
Still mightily imposing, Carrickfergus Castle tells the story of the past 800 years. Founded by the Normans in the 13th century, then substantially extended and strengthened over the centuries to be Ireland’s most impregnable fortification.
Carrickfergus Castle is not only one of the best preserved garrisons on this island, but the best located, offering commanding views across Belfast Lough.
Discover more of Carrickfergus’ colourful sage at the new Museum & Civic Centre in the heart of the town – boasting a collection dating back hundreds of years.
The Carrickfergus story also includes strong American and Scottish connections, highlighted at the Andrew Jackson ancestral Cottage and the US Rangers Centre dedicated to the elite regiment stationed here in World War II.
