Carrickfergus

Few places have witnessed more history than the heritage town of Carrickfergus.  Today Carrickfergus is a peaceful suburb in a beautiful seaside setting ten minutes from Belfast.  But, through the middle ages, this town was the major military stronghold on this island (the only stronghold at times) and the scene of invasion, siege and surrender up until the 17th century.

Carrickfergus’ strategic position on Belfast Lough ensured its status as Ulster’s leading town for centuries – until upstart Belfast toppled its crown!

Still mightily imposing, Carrickfergus Castle tells the story of the past 800 years.  Founded by the Normans in the 13th century, then substantially extended and strengthened over the centuries to be Ireland’s most impregnable fortification.

Carrickfergus Castle is not only one of the best preserved garrisons on this island, but the best located, offering commanding views across Belfast Lough.

Discover more of Carrickfergus’ colourful sage at the new Museum & Civic Centre in the heart of the town – boasting a collection dating back hundreds of years.

The Carrickfergus story also includes strong American and Scottish connections, highlighted at the Andrew Jackson ancestral Cottage and the US Rangers Centre dedicated to the elite regiment stationed here in World War II.

Best Museum Award for Flame
Flame Gasworks Museum in Carrickfergus has been awarded “Best Site/Museum Award in Ireland” by The Industrial Heritage Association of Ireland at a recent ceremony in Dublin.

Flame gasworks is Ireland’s sole surviving coal gasworks and is one of only three left in the British Isles. Opened in 1855, it supplied Carrickfergus with gas until 1965 and was closed in 1987. It is now fully restored and was reopened as a visitor and educational attraction. Besides housing the largest surviving set of gas-making retorts in Europe, the museum also boasts an extensive collection of gas appliances and library of gas-related publications.”
