Although the pace in Belfast is slower on Sundays, there are still a wide variety of activities and places to visit to ensure you have a great day out in the city.
Sunday mornings in particular tend to be quiet, with shops not opening until 1pm and many of the attractions opening after 12pm. However, you can see all the City’s many sights and landmarks including the colossal Harland and Wolff cranes, which are located in the same shipyard that was central in the building of the Titanic, and the famous political murals on one of the bus tours. In the summer months take a guided boat trip down the River Lagan to see where the Titanic was launched from or take your own self guided Awakin interactive tour from Belfast Welcome Centre.
Take a trip to the stunning Belfast Castle and Cavehill visitor centre, set in the picturesque Cavehill Country Park. Learn about the fascinating history of the castle and browse around the antique shop situated next to the Cellar restaurant. (9am-5.30pm) For something a little different, the Ulster Folk and Transport museum at Cultra brings history to life, with exhibit buildings including furnished houses, mills, shops, schools and churches that illustrate how people in Northern Ireland lived in the past. The museum also boosts the only permanent Titanic exhibition in Northern Ireland. See the penguins flap, sea lions dive, and the lions roar at Belfast Zoo.
You’ll find lots fun to keep children occupied in Belfast. The Odyssey entertainment complex has something for everyone, from the fascinating W5 interactive discovery centre where the kids (and the big kids!), can learn about the fun aspects of science, to the Odyssey Bowl and Storm Cinema. Belfast's Big Wheel located in the grounds of City Hall gives panoramic views of the city and beyond; the wheel is to remain open till the end of 2008.
Visit the east of the city and view the Parliament Buildings, known as Stormont home of the Northern Ireland Assembly. The public park is open until 7.30pm and you can walk from the main gates to the statue of Carson, along the Prince of Wales Avenue. You can also enjoy the glen walk and visit the excellent facilities at the children’s playground.
Enjoy a pint of Guinness in the beautifully preserved Victorian pub, the Crown Liquor Saloon that was built in 1849 and owned by the National Trust. Many local hostelleries have traditional music sessions or afternoon jazz or just good old fashioned craic and banter.
Belfast has a number of Beautiful churches. St. Anne’s Cathedral is one of the most magnificent cathedrals in Ireland. Designed by distinguished Irish architect, Sir Thomas Drew, in the Hiberno-Romanesque’ style, the Cathedral took 77 years to complete. Clonard Monastery in West Belfast has a rich and colourful history while St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Cathedral was recently restored to its former glory after substantial work and renovations.
Belfast is a golfer’s paradise, with eleven high quality courses and golf centres located inside the city boundary to choose from. Ireland’s oldest golf club, The Royal Belfast and Malone Golf Club are located within 20 minutes of the city centre.
Alternatively take advantage of this quiet time to recover from partying the night before and take a leisurely stroll along the beautiful River Lagan towpath or one of the City’s many parks including the Japanese Garden at Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park, or the horticultural brilliance of the bedding displays and herbaceous borders in Grovelands. (All Belfast Parks are open dawn-dusk.)
